In Assamese(local language) Tilinga means “bell” and mandir means “temple”. Tilinga Mandir is a famous Shiva Temple in upper Assam. Situated at Bordubi, a small town 7km fare from Tinsukia District of Assam. The establishment of this temple relates to a popular local story, which says that, in the year 1965, the tea garden workers of this area noticed a Shiva Linga, which emerged from the ground near a Banyan tree. The administrator of the garden decided to build a temple around the premises of the Banyan tree. Initially, people who came to offer their prayers, they promised to come back and present a bell if their prayers were answered.
With time, people came to know of this and started tying bells on the arms of this grand tree. You can find bells everywhere in copper, brass and aluminium, in sizes small as a pebble, others quite big and solid, weighing anything between 50 grams to 55 kg.
